With R&D centers in important Chinese cities like Shenzhen, Nanjing, Shanghai, and Xi’an, ZTE has independent software and hardware support platforms, industrial design platforms, and R&D testing platforms. Annually, 10% of its revenue is allocated to R&D. As of December 2012, ZTE’s mobile phone product system had 7,575 Chinese patent applications and 3,101 international patent applications. ZTE is one of the few manufacturers globally capable of developing a full range of mobile terminal products across nine categories, including 2G, 3G, 4G, mobile phones, wireless network cards, monitors, and wireless fixed phones, mastering all core mobile phone technologies except for some core chip development. It customizes terminal products based on the network and business characteristics of operators. ZTE’s mobile phone software and hardware R&D staff exceed 3,500.
In the 3G and 4G terminal markets, ZTE began competing globally in 2005 and has achieved several world firsts in video technology, mobile TV, multimedia data transmission, and UI, gaining extensive experience in these areas.
