In the 1980s, the young Guo Xueping entered Shandong University, where he studied biochemical pharmacology under Professor Zhang Tianmin. Professor Zhang was a pioneer in biochemical drug research in China, known as the “Father of Hyaluronic Acid in China.” Guo Xueping researched hyaluronic acid under Zhang Tianmin; this substance naturally found in the human body is widely present in tissues such as the skin, eyes, joints, and umbilical cords and is closely related to health. Soon, Guo mastered the extraction method. However, in China, chicken combs were consumed in large quantities as food ingredients, and the cost and raw material acquisition restricted the industrial transformation of the extraction method in China. By chance, he learned that people abroad were attempting to produce hyaluronic acid through microbial fermentation. If hyaluronic acid could be obtained through fermentation, it would be a revolutionary change. Two years later, one day, as he usually entered the laboratory, the moment he poured the fermentation liquid into the alcohol, hyaluronic acid surged out like cotton balls. He knew he had succeeded, and that moment of excitement also became a historic moment.
It was also at this time that Zhao Yan met Guo Xueping by chance with her business dream. Guo Xueping, holding the core technology of microbial fermentation, met Zhao Yan, who had a keen business sense and majored in biology at the university. The future of hyaluronic acid was depicted at that moment, and the potential of Bloomage Biotech gradually emerged. After taking over Bloomage Biotech, Zhao Yan became interested in hyaluronic acid as a naturally occurring substance in the human body for its safe and natural moisturizing effects. At that time, hyaluronic acid had already begun to be used in many fields internationally, and Guo Xueping and the R&D team were also conducting research on the transformation of hyaluronic acid from raw materials to end products. Zhao Yan’s keen business sense and creativity once again combined with Guo Xueping’s perseverance in scientific exploration.
In 2012, “BIOHYALUX Injectable Modified Hyaluronic Acid Sodium Gel” was approved by the former State Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) for market, which was China’s approved cross-linked hyaluronic acid soft tissue filler, breaking the market monopoly of international brands. From substance to product, from the laboratory to industrialization, hyaluronic acid began to exert its effect, moisturizing not only Zhao Yan herself but “beautifying the world’s faces,” turning hyaluronic acid from a rare substance into an end product for the masses. In 2014, the B.F.S. aseptic filling technology used for eye drops production was applied to the production of functional skincare products, and BIOHYALUX launched the “Honeycomb Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Monodose” product, creating a new category of hyaluronic acid monodose essence.
As BIOHYALUX became more and more beloved by consumers, Zhao Yan realized that BIOHYALUX’s product strength could compete with international brands. She began to think about how to take “Chinese intelligence” to the world. Zhao Yan, who loves culture and art, thought of the Palace Museum, the epitome of Chinese civilization. In 2018, Bloomage Biotech and the Palace Museum jointly launched the “BIOHYALUX · Palace Museum Lipstick,” which became a hit and won international acclaim. Guo Xueping and his team used the company’s patented ingredient Hyacolor® oil-dispersible hyaluronic acid in lipsticks, solving a widely recognized problem in the cosmetics industry—the difficulty of adding highly hydrophilic hyaluronic acid to entirely oil-based formulas—allowing hyaluronic acid to break through the “makeup forbidden zone.”
To date, all core products of BIOHYALUX are based on hyaluronic acid as the core ingredient, through bio-activation technology, working in synergy with many bioactive substances.
